Ken,

You know, I just learned more about sandeels in your two very gracious and illustrative replies than I have learned from spending over half my surfcasting...

I now know why Long Island surfcasters, for the past few seasons, have watched endless processions of bas cavorting in the froth while they crashed bait during the "fall run" - but almost always a few decent casts off the beach.

I now know why I never have seen huge sandeels in the spring while wadings sandflats and tossed Hellcats to rising bass, yet have never seen small ones mixed in with the huge species I have witnessed pushed up against the shore in October and November. Little did I know that these are two different varieties of the same fish!

Thank you Ken. I know you can tell from the time of my writing that I am not fishing again. That's more because I was planning a trip out to Montauk and the incredible amount of rain we got has clayed-up the entire coastline out there. Yes, there are more local opportunities but I was ill-prepared to handle them tonight. Either way, there will be other nights.

Thanks
John
