John:
I fish the north shore of Long Island Sound. Although I do most of my fishing in Rhode Island simply because the areas to fish are more concentrated.
However, I recommend fishing in the back bays and estuaries in the spring. Yes, there are plenty believe it or not. In summer or fall you can fish the beaches. You need to find structure. Many of the areas are inaccessible because of the nature of the coastline and development. There are places you can access estuarine outlets, Goldsmiths is one. If you have a boat you can access the Old Field Lighthouse area or the Flax Pond outlet.
But, I have caught more striped bass in one afternoon of fishing in the Rhode Island rocks than in the 12 years I have been fishing the North Shore of Long Island.
That said, my best recommendation for "richer" fishing is in the spring when stripers are chasing the baitballs that hatch in the back estauries. In my case I have a little honey hole in a back bay of Port Jefferson Harbor.
After the water ski boats arrive, I get out the golf clubs.
Hope this helps.
Anthony
