The, "Industry," knows nothing about fishing or being fishermen. Many of them only fish a couple of days a year and with guides, (Very much like fishing writers.) They know and care about selling stuff. Product development is not about catching fish. It is about getting people to buy stuff. If it works is not important. Selling out of product inventory is success not catching fish. If it does not sell even if it works they drop it and come out with a new product to use the shelf sapce. We think that if it catches fish it will sell but that is not often the case. If it looks good to people and people buy it it will sell and it will be carried again next year even if it sits in someones closet and never catches a single fish.
A big bushy fly with a half a chicken tied to the shank will outsell a hundred sparse fish catching flies every time.
Which fly do you think will be carried next year? The bushy one of course.
And so it goes.
