I got my first bass in the surf at dusk last night on South Shore beach. A two or three year old with a white top outer lip took a big bugster-like black soft hackle. There is a big rock past the end of the parking lot in the surf break and I was swimming my flies through the eddy there. The fish I've been catching around Newport, I've noticed, have dark green-olive top outer lips. I wonder what the lip colors signifies. The bass I've seen caught in the CA surf showed a whitish or chalk aspect on their facial features and muted topside colors.
