Subject: Re: Surf Fish and Lip Color

Lip color is something I've never really thought about with regards to identifying fish. It's probably because I usually only see bass from the same area. I know that certain irregularities in the lateral stripes on bass can be used to identify fish to some degree. I wonder if lip-coloring is a regional variation due to population genetics or external biological factors. Anybody know more about identifying features and if fish can actually be identified from originating from a certain region, or does their migratory nature mean that they are all mostly from the same genetic make-up?
What about fin or tail size/shape and regional variation? Any personal observations?
