There are lots of them and there are races of them from different river systems. I do not know of any research that has been done but I do know that there are differences in the length to tail width ratios that are dramatic. There are long thin fish that are almost four to one in that ratio like salmon and there are short stocky ones that are 3 and 3/4 to one.
Color changes occur in all of them depending on the environment they are in. Fish on sandy bottoms have a light yellow cast and fish from rock are darker and have dark olive backs and lips and fish from deep water have a purplish hue along their sides. Also when they turn on in a blitz type feeding energy they have a glow that is gold or yellowish. Fish change colors like chameleons to match their environments.
The reason I know about the ratios of tail to width is because I have measured lots of fish and did a lot of exact measuring because of drawing them in minute detail. Kind of like medical illustrations. Proportions are important in that kind of drawing.
There are races tha are different.
The same is true with Steelhead and other anadromous fish taht seperate and spawn in different river systems. Stripers do the same even though it is not talked about by commercial interests and their scientist as it could cause them dificulties with individual states and their stocks of native born stipers bing harvested and possibly being wiped out.
All the states have native fish unique to ther river systems as does Canada and even Florida in the St Johns River and always have had them. That was a well known fact long before the turn of the last century. They are not hold over fish at all they are native and breed. Natural selection cause them to differ in physical traits and spawning times.
