Subject: Surf

surf (n.) The waves of the sea as they break upon a shore or reef.

That said, I believe any beach with exposure to, in our case, open ocean experiences "surf". I dont think the same of the chop generated by wind on a shorter body of water such as our bay, as it tends to be a shallow affect. A ocean wave has an energy that advances traveling or radiating for many mile. When the natural rolling of that wave is disturbed by the a reef or beach, any structure that interferes with the natural progression of the wave, it breacks and creats surf... This can be on the beach but an outflow of current flowing into the wave can to this also. The surf amkes its own currents and eddies. All of that water crashing into something has to go somewhere else to the same energy that , in some cases travels thousands of miles, bounces against an obsticle it surges and releases back into the next wave... This repeats and that water diverts to another dirrection creating currents unlike anywhere else. Its is in these Surf currents that we find our prize. they will hold a fly and bring an inanimate object to life, pulsing and dancing creating what we desire, the illusion of life.

It is a challange unlike anywhere else you may fish. It is more rewarding as well.

That is what I think Fly fishing the "surf" is.
