My intro to the surf was on cape during the spring migratory period. You see the pods of fish coming from a quarter mile a way and all you have to do is put the fly in the vicinity of the school and you hook up rather easy.
Well as fish settle in this tactic is no longer applicable. You really need to change your thinking and treat the surf zone as a river. Find the current and you find the fish. Rip currents are the major sources of current in the surf. Learn how to locate the rip currents and 9 times out of ten you find the fish. Ken's article is a great place to start on how to approach fishing the surf. Better than that is coming to a tuesday evening when a surf spot is chosen. One walk down the beach with Ken and you will learn more than you would in 5 years of going it alone. The great thing about tuesdays is the sheer knowledge available and free nature at which this knowledge is given out. It is truly one of the best things you can do to expand your knowledge. A lot of knowledgable surf guys always come and you will learn a ton.
I know a decent amount and would be happy to show you what I know. In the coming weeks as more fish start feeding more in the daylight hours is going to be a great time to start honing your skills. Drop me an email and I would be more than happy to show you what I know if you would like. It is really a fun fishery and quite productive once you start keying in on how to approach and fish the surf. I am heavily indebted to Ken and the tuesday night crowd for unlocking the mystery of the surf...
