Not sure exactly, but sounds like something that would keep me busy for a while as well.

One guess based on your description though. You say you are picking up fish dead drifted into the rip at the end of the flat. I'm going to assume this is the end of your swing and the flies may actually be rising toward the surface at this point up into the surface feeding lane. The entire slow stretch before the rip your fly might be sinking too deep as a result of your dead drift.

Basically, even though you think you are fishing the surface the entire drift, you may only be bringing the fly up at the end of your drift toward the rip. I had a similar problem last night actually.

Go figure.
