The proper term for what you are doing is, "Editing," the, "Drift."
Backreeling is very similar in practice to, "Greased lining," or what I call the "Slipping drift."
The essence is the plug come to the fish in his feeding lane - not - the fish moves off station and chases after the plug.

That is an important thing to know and use.
