Subject: Finessing During a Blitz

Took a cue from Nick this morning and slowed everything way way way down when the fish were "going crazy" in front of me and found that the results went up. I put on a mag minnow with a teaser and would barely crank it in, with long pauses and twitches. Switched to a surface popper with the same technique and got no hits. Went back to the mag minnow and began catching fish. It was funny, all the fish on the mag minnow were snagged. I suspect that they were inadvertent by-catch during the fight with the fish hooked on the teaser. But there was something about the mag minnow that got the fly doing what the fish would respond to. Maybe depth in the water column. Not sure....

Saturday, with no fish showing, with a smack it and teaser, same slow slow slow technique, a number of fish took the smack it. If I increased the pace a fraction, the hits would stop. Switch to other plugs with normal retrieves, no hits. Back to the smack it with the super slow retrieve, and the hits would begin again.

This approach is making a believer out of me.
