I hit up a local backbay spot last night here in NJ that has been serving up schoolie bass recently. I was armed with a 9' soft spinning rod (I built it from a 6wt IM6 fly blank) 2500 size reel, 10 lb. Spiderwire Stealth and small 2" white grubs and shads and various sized jig heads. I started off blind casting black over pearl 2" shads on a 1/4 oz. head and after about 30 minutes hooked up with something that tore a bit of line and jumped like a tarpon. Nothing for the next 15 minutes. Moved over to a nice little flow where there were fish breaking all over the place. Cast up and across, slipped the line under my left hand index finger while I followed the drift with my right hand holding the rod at 12 o'clock. On my third cast, I feel a hit, come tight and sweep set and a silver mini tarpon takes flight 3 times before I bring him to hand. It was a nice 13-14" herring. Took 4 more and missed a few others in about 45 minutes. No bass to be had but these little herring were a blast on the long soft rod. I love this kind of close quarters finnesse fishing. The fish were all within a short 20' cast.
I plan to go back this week and hope to hook into some striped ones, but I'll gladly take these silver mini-tarpon as well.
Lou
