3/16 of an oz. or lighter. !/4 oz. is a bit heavy in my opinion but it has its time and place. If the wind is strong and you need to feel the jig - a bit heavier weight or a bigger piece of plastic can do it for you and give you the right feel. Strong wind or heavy current can make it difficult to "Control" the rate of fall or sense the feel of the jig transmitted to the tip.
Heavier lines also deaden the feel tremendously but they can help with a heavier jig to slow its fall.
Finding the right balance of jig weight size of plastic and rate of fall with the variables of wind and current is the name of the game. When you get it all tuned up it is amazing how well you do compared to simply casting and reeling like a robot.
