My very favorite type is a rod at least nine feet long with a tight action which means a tuning fork type sensitivity. I like the length to keep the line out of the water and in current it is even more critical.

If you learn how to use the length then you will out-fish everyone who does not know how to use it.

I like a reel that is balanced in terms of how the bail spins around the spool. I like an anti-reverse that is total and has no play at all. The rod and reel should be balanced in terms of in your hand balance not tip heavy at all but if anything a bit butt heavy. The drag is not critical but smoothness at light settings is --because your hand is the best drag and learning how to use your fingers and raising and lowering the rod as a drag is the best thing you can ever master. Light line and mechanical drags is bush league no matter what the mfg. say about drags.

Your hand is the finest drag on earth. And it is infinitely adjustable without a thought.

That's for openers at least for me.
