2 years ago this spring I had a very similar experience in a bigger deeper channel.
It is in Portsmouth, RI and is refered to as the escape bridge. There is a large salt pond that is fed perpendicular to the Sakonnet River. it drains and flood fast and the entry is robably 30-40 yards. It is deep. I would guess around 20 feet. Most people fish the pond side of the bridge I was on the river side.
I was spin fishing and only had a light spinning rod and a jig that was on it. Found acouple motre on the the truck tire but most of my gear was out of the truck.
I only had 3/8 oz jig heads or the large 6" storm. The light rod could get the jig past center of the channel. I cast up currentabout 20 degrees I would let it eneter the water and leave it. Give it 5 seconds and bring in the slack. I would not reel after that. The jig would sink and swing across the channel towards me and I believe that as it gotclose to my side I think it would rise a little but the start of the swing it when deep. I would get a take on most casts. The fish were deep. I had tried retrieving with no luck I was fishing near someone esle casting jigs catching nothing. I think I was lucky the the 3/8ths jigh seemed to bee the right weight for that depth and current.
The fish I caught were fat dark bright and heathy. trhey did not want to leave the deep water and pulled hard.
It is is a great way to fish.
