Harling is similar to trolling but instead of pulling the lure behind the boat, the Gillie either holds the boat stationary in the current or moves it with the oars across the river from side to side so that the lure (or dead prawn / sardine bait) is drifted/swum across a known Salmon lie several times from each direction. There is no retrieve as such, just the current effect used to swim the baits or lures over the fish. The presentation skill is in the hands of the Gillie rather than the angler. It used to be very common on the bigger Scotish rivers like the Tay and still popular on bigger rivers in Norway like the Namsen.
