Subject: hook setting |

Went to the back side of Crane beach this AM to try my hand at drifting jigs. After several attempts st weights and sizes began getting hits on a 1/16 ounce jig rigged with a 3" Kalin pumpkinseeed grub. I was getting nice long drifts with this set up, right under wsome oif the cast and strip guys. I had first thought that I might get hung up when our lines crossed, but I soon realized that they were much higher in the water column that I was. Not to worry. I had multiple hits on some of my drifts this AM but was having trouble with the hook set. New jig out of the box, sticky sharp, but very small gap and hook. The few fish I did land were all of 8 to 9 inches long.... Just very small fish. Hook gap? My timing off? Not sure....
Then I hiked out to the outer side and walked all the way out to the outer main channel marker. (Joey, if you read this, you know the spot. It's where we pulled that guy out after he walked off the bar into deep water the other summer. You can walk out there all the time now. Not sure if that's good or bad....) Ended drifting 3/16 ounce jigs with the pumpkinseed grub off the shelf into that deep water. Once I got the drift right (cast up current a bit to be sure the jig got righ to the bottom as it drifted off the shelf) I got into some decent fish. I didn't stay long as it can get pretty dicey out there pretty fast when the tide turns.... Buy I was able to at least confirm a feeling...
