I figured I would give this board a bit of life.
Lately I have watching shrimp drifting by at a local haunt and trying to figure out a good way to catch stripers feeding on drifting shrimp near the surface on conventional gear. Any of the shrimp lures that I find for sale at tackle shops always have some lead in them which prevents a good surface drift.
The other night I found fish feeding on drifting shrimp and threw out a couple GP's on the fly rod to see if they would hit shrimp patterns. I got a couple fish on a white GP then switched over to throwing a plastic tube bait with a light wire hook with no wait at all on a small spinning setup. The type of tube where you stick a lead jighead up inside it and fish it near the bottom to mimic crayfish for catching smallmouths. The tube drifted in the current near the surface just as I hoped and what do you know I got a couple small schoolies. I would let the tube drift in the current back reeling and and occasionally give it a twitch or keep the line taught and letting it swing over a potential bass hangout.
I figured all in all a good day for catching stripers with finese tactics in December.
