Got a nice mail order of soft plastics yesterday, so I had to spend the
night trying them out. Mail order catalogues can be dangerous to the
wallet.

Learned a few things last night.

It is amazing how fast a 1/32 ounce jig will sink, even in current. I
think I need to find some even smaller heads for slower sink rates.

Playing with curly tail (ie amount of curl) length can entice selective fish
to hit. I started off with a 3" Kalin and kept removing bits and pieces
from both ends. I would get one fish to hit every time I made a
modification, and that was it until I made another one. By the time I
was finished my grub was less than an inch long.

Translucense in soft plastic is just as important as it is with flies or
anything else.

Your hook is never sharp enough!!!! Even if it sticks into your
thumbnail it still may not be sharp enough. Carrying a file has
become second nature to me. It gets used more often than any other
fishing tool I may use and I still don't use it enough. It is to the point
now if I miss a fish I am certain it is because my hook isn't sharp
enough.

My fingers are more sensative than my reel is to bait drop and retreive
pressure. Looping line in my hand with a hand twist works just as well
with six pound test as it does fly line.

Lastly this stuff is fun. It makes me pay attention to technique and
presentation. I watched a fluke follow my jig all the way to the surface
from the bottom. I can see bass inspecting my rig just like they would
anything else. I can see bass fleeing from my rig when it isn't quite
right. Even light fly-gear feels heavy and cumbersome to me after
playing with this stuff all night.
