Subject: Dead plugs

The time of dead drifted plugs in the surf is here again.

It is always amazing to see a fish wack a plug just sitting there on the surface in moderate surf. Floating plugs are prefered as the sinkers would end up on the bottom.

Fished a place the other night where the sand met the rocks with swim lipped plugs at a stand still. Most hits on a static plug resulted in hooked fish while a fellow cranking plugger left all his hits out in the water.

Keep your plugs super sticky sharp and use the reel to start the hook then fire it home with the butt of the rod after the weight of the fish is on. A taught line without moving the plug is all that is needed. It is a really interesting way to fish and requires a bit of discipline to not crank the reel except for when a fish hits.
