Dead drifts can be the only thing that works some nights.
Cranking can only be the thing that works some nights.
Both can be the only thing that works some nights.
Big splashes can be the only thing that works some night.
This wasn't about what works better than the other, just something that most don't try. I kind of like reinforcing it as frequently as I can.
There was something going on that evening for all those missed hits. It seems to make sense that a crank retrieve would hook the fish if they were hitting the plug to feed. One fish was hooked in the nose. Usually something is up when that happens. Maybe the slower response of the drift kept a better longer contact with the fish.
I don't know it just seemed to work.
Besides I can't resist picking on blown hookups.
So were your hooks sharp???????
:)
It took me a lot of practice to figure it out.
