It didn’t really make sense to me until you said cat and mouse. Now I think I’m starting to get the point.

I’ve played this game with cats in the past.

Take a ball on a string and go find your cat laying on the bed. He’s not happy to see you but doesn’t care enough to move or even flinch. Take the ball and swing it in front of his face and he will instinctively swat at it. Do it a second time and he won’t even bat an eye. Over and over but he’ll still ignore you.

Now take the ball and place it on the bed right in front of him with the end of the string in your hand. Just sit there motionless. The cat will start to wonder. He won’t do anything, but you can see something’s going on in his mind. Not really interest, maybe just a little annoyed. Now gently pull the string, but don’t really move the ball. Just sort of make it seem like you are going to move it. Then stop and wait… and wait…. Do it again…. Then eventually, seemingly out of nowhere, the cat will attack the ball.

Of course, I’m taking the analogy a little too literally, but it made sense to me that way.
