I like your post. IT is caled fish patterning and we have a board just for that kind of discussion. The same pattern is true on flats. The fish do stay in a particular depth and move in relation to that depth.
They also do leave and come in a pattern. Some nights and days for that matter they will be in a different depth and depending on the environment they will use other features to hold that generate current to feed.
You have big tide where you live and the water empties and fills quite fast when compared to R.I. On a small tide here the water may only rise 6" an hour.
That changes the amount of time a fish can and will hold in an area. In othe words they may hold in a certain spot for several hours before the move but when it getd too shallow or to deep or the flow changes because of the change in water depth then they do move. And they move in a pattern. They know where they are going. It is never ramdom.
Depth control is what you are working off of and you are correct in noticing it. It is not an either or scenario is is an either /or /and scenario.
The "and" part is what keeps it fluid and fascinating.
I am glad to see you posting and it is not a fly fishing only site. There are no fly fishing only Elitists who feel comfortable discussing fishing on these boards. Fly fishing is good and so is every other way of fishing.
The only thing we do not do is promote businesses either guide business or destination business or tackle or lure business or one way or the highway styles of fishing. THe people who do only fish one way are always accusing us of what they in fact do. We do not believe in their religious beliefs so tehy ridicule our freedom and say it is exclusive.
Your post is about real fishing and trying to talk about what is important in fishing for serious fishermen. It is not belligerent, "You gotta do this or you gotta do that," and I know everything. Swinging a big sluggo is not different in purpose than swinging a big fly or swimming a plug in five feet of water in current or retriving one in still water. People use different lures but often use the same methodology because the fish and their behavior are the constant we are focused on. A good fisherman may fish many different ways but the focus is the same with good fishermen. What the fish are up to. And getting in sync with it. Thanks for posting.
