Last week I was privileged enough to observe bass behavior that I have known to exist but never seen with my own eyes. I went to the Warren River bike path bridge to fish. I was on the eastern bank on the beginning of the rise because I noticed some fish rising in the current. After catching a few 16-20” fish I began to hear fish rising and popping in the area under and south of the set of bridges. I walked under the bike path and the fish were feeding in almost a blitz type fashion. As the current increased the surface action seemed to dissipate. They were all relatively small so instead of fishing I decided to go up on the bike path bridge to see if I could spot them. I first looked at the light post shadow because although I could see fish rising I couldn’t see them under the surface. Finally I spotted a shape in the pole shadow and saw it rise. After that my eyes became adjusted and knew what to look for and dozens of fish suddenly appeared to me in the light! These small fish 12-20” were holding in a variety of spots near the surface. The first group I saw was holding behind the pilings. There were 4 or 5 always visible just behind the bridge shadow in the light. They were tightly grouped and swaying side to side in the turbulent flow behind the structure. They effortlessly twitched their tails in the steadily increasing flow holding their ground. To the right and left of the pilings there were fish holding in the laminar flow side by side just under the surface. They would move slightly from side to side or roll backward on the surface when trying to intercept a meal. These fish were very competitive with one another all diving after the same meal as it drifted by. The bait was too small for me to see but there behavior made it obvious when something drifted by. At times I would see much larger numbers of fish rise from deeper feeding positions. Being the first time I’ve witnessed this, I wondered if larger fish take position in the same way or if they tend to be more cautious about making themselves visible from above? This was truly amazing to witness none the less. Anyone witness the same sort of thing with larger fish?
