What is it about fishing deep?

Is it the mystery of the deep that intrigues everyone?

Whether it be with fly, plug, or bait.

Time and time again I see fish breaching surface with a fisher pitching a jig or sinking line at them.

This past year I have put a lot of thought into the matter based on my observations.

I have curiously watched other fishers fishing deep and slow only to come up empty handed time and time again. Yet, I drift over to the same spot and see fish rising and bait spraying along the surface.

Granted, I have caught fish while fishing along the bottom but have caught most of them along the top no matter how deep the water was.

My fish numbers and sizes have increased since I have started to target them along the top few feet of the water column.

I have come across many examples in the short timespan of my experience.

Now I am able to look back at those experiences and better analyze them.

I look back to the times when I caught fish using weighted offerings designed to fish deep and realize that the fish I caught came when my lure was near the surface. It was moving quickly just under the surface or right when it hit the water or I was about to pull it out for another cast.

I think about all the times when I trolled up North for landlocked salmon and had most of my hits the days I left my sinking fly lines at home. I also think back to the normal protocols that are given for them. Use a sinking line but troll very fast. In essence, plane your line and fly just under the surface.

I am by far no great fisher and have lots to learn.

I realize that many great fish are taken by controlled depth techniques with wire and lead line.

I am just curious as to why fishing deep is for the most part the way to fish??
