The current thought that I have been chewing on this past week is the difference between this years top water pattern versus last years top water pattern.
Last year the presentation of choice was a side to side twitching of "walk the dog" type with spooks of any size or color.
This year it has been different. It has been the "chug a lug" of a popper.
Last year I couldn't buy a hit with a any popper other than a pencil, which has more of that side twitch. I tried poppers fast, slow, pause, just reeling in, twitch, or even no retrieve at all. All sorts of colors and sizes but I didn't have much effort from any fish on them.
It was all about the spook last year. Lots of boils with chases, and lots of hits.
This year the spook seems to be out of vogue with the fish. Very few chases with even fewer hits. But the popper seems to be taking up the slack. Now it doesn't seem to matter on size or color so much, just that different top water presentation.
Now I know that on certain days there is "THE LURE" to use but I am just curious as to how the season so far is similar but different to last year?
It is very interesting for me to think about. The bait seems to be the same doing the same bait things as it has done since I have started to really study it.
I really like to try all kinds of things and see what kinds of reactions I get. Some are surprising and some aren't. I guess that I like to find out what doesn't work and why, not so much of what does work. I let my Pop handle that side of things.
Any body else run into some interesting patterns this season to note?
