At the east end of the cape cod canal is a fish market ,Joe's lobster and fish, on both sides of the building are parking lots which abutt right at the waters edge ,they are well lit because this is the area that the commercial fishing vessels unload their catch, during the course of the fishing season these lights attract every living creature that swims the canal,it's a very popular place for snagging squid. There is a definite shadow line created by these lights which extends 75 -100 feet into the canal as the bait fish mill about under these lights you can see the squid chasing and grasping the bait fish, well as you can imagine larger bait attract bigger fish,I can remember over 25 years ago when striper sightings were rare I was snagging squid with several portuguese old timers, when out of the dark water came 2 of the largest stripers I had seen in years, they were gone as quick as they appeared, everybody scrambled for their rods to change plugs ,but there were no more sightings.I remember looking over at my snagging buddies ,they didn't speak english well and I don't speak a word of portuguese,we got each of our feelings across by spreading our arms the width of the stripers we had just seen and just shaking our heads.
