You are not alone. That can sometimes be very difficult. We have several places here where the lights attract fish and some times they can be easy and sometimes very hard.

First find out what the bait is, then watch the fish closely and see how they are actually feeding. You may be able to see a pattern and there is one for sure. Try droppers with different size flies and if you do catch one try and remember exactly what you were doing with your fly and repeat it.

When they are easy to catch lots of flies and methods work but when they are hard it seems that nothing works.

IF you have any waves there watch and see if the fish come to the little beach break right close to shore and feed there right after a wave dumps and flows back out. If they do try to pattern them and put your fly right there when you cast it.

I have done pretty well using that idea but it is still difficult if there is a solid mass of bait and the fish are meandering under it and picking off from the bottom of the school.

When the bait is that thick people often say that they are just gulping down the bait but that is only when they do not catch.

IT is a feel good excuse. They do focus on a single baitfish out of the billions and they may catch a couple of extras by accident but they are focused on one.

It can be maddening for sure but it is better than fishing to empty water.

IF you can put your fly right on a fishes nose when he is going to eat you stand a chance.

IF the bait is not as thick then make sure you catch one and see it and imitate it as to size and use droppers to bracket that size.

There are lots of standard tricks like casting to the edge of the school of bait or letting your fly sink without moving it and using a big raucous fly or a surface fly to attract attention. All those ideas will work for aggressive fish and there usually are a couple or three in a school.

Once you catch them you have to go back to the picky ones.

Some times a wildly colored fly of a crazy size will continue to catch. So...
Know the bait pattern the feeding routine of the fish and use droppers and if that doesn't work sit down and enjoy the show.
They probably will be back the next night and you can try again wit h some new flies and ideas.

IT is a normal occurrence and people who fish at night have all experienced it or else they have very limited experience.
