Not alone for sure ! Each place and time is different too so it is difficult (which is fisherman for not possible) to come up with a "just extend X and slow down Y and your IN" theory. By way of example; I was fishing at just such a place with bait spraying out from the first breaker to the wash. So I started casting just beyond the first breaker (near HT). And casting and casting. My thinking was this has got to be the killing zone, I can see bait comming out of the water and swirls... A half hour later I'm thinking about another theory but I'm not trying too many of them out because I'm still in love with the way I think it's all happening. Now I'm not to proud to admit that my first success came, not from being methodical and fishing all parts of the surf or even from stopping to think but from stopping my strip about 10 feet in front of me to light a smoke. The fly washed around in about 2 waves and was inhaled about 5 ft from where I was standing. I am proud of the fact that I was smart enough to note that and I began dappling my fly right at the edge and began hooking up. When the tide went out I got a better idea of what was going on. This beach had a trough (deeper than most) right at the edge. While the bait was running away and being chased in the breakers, it was being gobbled down in this little trough. Sometimes you never find it, sometimes it can't be found (mostly because time runs out and things move along) but I always try to practice what I preach to myself when I make my first cast (cast out, try a fan pattern, go parallel to the beach, let it drift in the current,be observant, don't fall in love with what you think is happening, be open, be observant, change yourself, not your fly). Sometimes I figure it out on the car ride home or tell myself I do and sometimes on the beach. Good luck.
