At 1 am I got there too early. The trough was about five feet and at least fifteen feet wide with deeper holes. I didn't want wet armpits with this cool breeze so I did what had to be done. I stood and watched until the water told me where it was deep and where it was less deep. Off to the left I think. Another ten minutes of watching and I am sure now so off I go a hundred feet down the beach and in up to my belly. Ok, that was expected, now for the forward shuffle, peering for clues as I go. Going, going, not getting deeper, going, going until my foot hits something. Sand. Ahhhh. Is it the begining or a slight rise? Down I go. Ok, don't lose faith. There are bigger ripples just thirty feet ahead. Shuffle, shuffle. Up again, and still up and more. Found it! Now that I'm on this bar I can see exactly how it runs as I make my way out to the breaking surf. There isn't anything like the excitement of being alone on or in a good spot before the first offering with nobody giving commands or advice except you and the surf. I launch my first big hope and the night is good under a star lit sky, and they were there.
