The rocks are intimidating for a number of reasons. The areas between the boulders can get deep and a dunking is not wholly out of the question. Rogue waves can dislodge you from your perch causing bodily injury and gear issues. Some boulders are difficult to negotiate because after all most are round and slippery.
But, I have discovered the boulder fields to be among the most productive for bass fishing over the years. Stripers seem to have the advantage over baitfish in these areas. They also use these areas for foraging for non-baitfish food sources such as lobsters and crabs.
I think people tend to get too aggressive in these areas. You need to stay focused and think "little water". A few short casts and move on.
