People do it both ways with screws and through drilling and they put a small nail out the side to hang their lure on so it casts easily without it swinging like a pendulum. When it hits the water the jig drops down.
Most people use jigs. The egg keeps them above the bottom so they don't get hung and they can fish the jig slowly if necessary. There are posts on the converntional board somewhere about rigging them. It is called a Jerry Sylvester rig after the fellow who first came up with the setup about sixty years ago for fishing jigs in the rocks and on rock bars.
