I can't remember when or why I stopped losing plugs in the rocks. It's rare I even donate a bucktail these days, but I fish them a lot and you're inherently going to lose them occasionally. Thankfully they're cheap.

Maybe it's just something you aquire with time, I'm really not sure. But you get past that phase. I remember it distinctly because it was expensive...

As you learn the bottom in the spots you fish you'll know when to quicken your retrieve or lift your rod tip higher to avoid a hang. Learn to be patient when landing big fish so your line doesn't make contact with rocks in those last critical moments of the fight. I think it's just small things like that.

Heavier leaders help, but I find most of my losses occur from my main line contacting something rather then my leader.

On the technical side on find Fireline to be MUCH tougher in the rocks then Power Pro, almost competing with mono. I generally like a longer surf stick around 10 feet to help manuever whatever offering I'm fishing around any hazards.

Accurate casting matters arounde the rocks too. Close is good and too close obviously can be a problem.
