Subject: Weighted flies vs lead core

Bert and I fished the rocks around Black point yesterday -- started an
hour after high tide and dusk. I worked through the various rock
washes (Al's "secret" spots) with a two fly set up. I had a ~1 foot
section of lead core between my butt section and a 6 foot straight
leader. Since the water was still dirty from the big blow, my hope was
to get things down a bit. My first fly (Ray's) was positioned about a
foot below the lead core and the point fly was a larger flatwing. I
worked through all the spots without even a nudge. Bert followed
about 10 min later -- he had a 3 fly set up with the point fly being a
large Cht/Wht clouser and the top flys larger flatwings. He picked up
several schoolies, all on the clouser. Our casting distance and retrieval
rates were similar. Bert seemed to pick up fish as the clouser dropped
through the foam. Question: was the lead core putting me too deep?
Would I have been better off putting on split shot close to my point fly?
Although Bert now likes his clousers, I'd like an alterative solution.
