Favorite places to fish huh?

Along with inlets, outlets, uplets and downlets ;-P...

And don't forget the rocks that aren't right at your feet. Some of the best ones are just out of site but there effects can be seen from the surface. It can be subtle, like a place where a wave comes in parallel to shore but one section always seems to crest and break before the rest of the wave. Just a little bit though. Little clues like that are the ones I like.

As far as the original topic goes, surface swimmers (your redfins perhaps) or topwater like spooks or poppers are a great way to probe new (or old) water. Once you find the fish I find it a good idea to pay a little more attention to that piece of water that gave it up. Look for little clues, a current seem or even a change in the angle of the approaching waves (when breaking waves are not happening at the moment). A falling tide is always good for exploring. As the water gets lower and water moves faster, some of the reefs secrets may become more obvious, but at the same time the fish may move from that original location you found to a better hold. Mental notes...

Maybe sometimes it is as simple as the visible edge of deepwater or where the rocks intescect the sand. Fish love edges, I'm not sure why but they really love the things. Maybe it's an edge that provides a quick route to deepwater amidst a pile of shallow rocks, or maybe it's as obvious as a rip line formed by breaking waves. There are so many little clues. I love the exploring and the speculating and the testing, but at the same time I try not to get too hung up on my silly little theories.

Boulder fields are a beautiful thing. One of my favorites as well.
