Fishing Rhode Island's rocky coastlines has been somewhat intimidating to me over the past 15 years or so. As a fly fisherman I need to get out to a perch safely while battling incoming pushes of waves and the ever-present boulders and bubble weed. With korkers and a wading staff I have resolved to take my time and get out onto the rocks step by step; even waiting out sets of waves for minutes at a time before moving my feet. I wear a water-tight kayak jacket as does Al, my friend and fishing buddy for the past 20 years. The adage that there are old fishermen and bold fishermen but no old, bold fishermen is always in the back of my mind when I approach these areas. The strategy was recently put to the test during a blitz off the rocks in South County. I made my way out onto a reef with gently rolling surf and found myself a flat boulder from which to cast. With bunker and bay anchovies infesting the waters I was quickly into stripers with my fly rod. With my rod doubled over, Al joined me and from there on out it was a clinic in striper fishing with a fly rod. It was one of the most enjoyable days of fishing in a long time! If you take your time and resist the temptation to go blazing out during a blitz you will surely be rewarded.
