I find a few things are key in selecting a flyfishing boat. First something small enough to get in tight, big enough to fish 2 people and yet have the range to go where you want to go. Second, buy a boat that you know will always bring you home! The boat should not pound when going into a rough sea, deep "V". It should be clean of snags. Its amazing how a fly line can hook around and hang on just about everything. Casting deck forward (no rail), aft space to control the boat and also throw a line. An all glass boat = low maintenance. Paint the bottom, wax the hull, tune the engine and dunk it in. Hit it with a hose after a bloody morning, grab your gear and go home.I really like my setup. My boat is 21', small enough to get into the shallows, big enough to fish two, and not being stupid...know its enough boat to bring me home. Center console, low profile, no "T" top to smash your rod into. Lastly, when fishing alone I always wear a form of low profile lifejacket! You never know. Lastly, always be wary of the swell. I often fish spots that I know will be protected from a set of waves that you cannot recover from. With that in mind I make a point to keep the bow out to open water just in case. Hit the juice forward & don't make that mistake again.
