I think this is the most important insight I have ever read on leaders in my life. Kenney
I learned some interesting things about leaders this week. I took the leader that I caught 2 bass on, and broke it using a digital fish scale and gradual pressure. Not very scientific, but it gave me approximate or relative results.
The leader, after catching only 2 fish, broke far below the line strength. the 20 lb. tippet broke at 12 lbs. The dropper at 30 lbs. broke at about 16 lbs. It doesn't take much damage to weaken the leader. I will be changing leaders even more often from now on.
I tested a brand new braided mono butt. I use pliobond to secure the loops. I wondered if it would hold. It does. The braided mono broke on several tries, but the pliobond loop did not fail.
So, it's a new leader each time I go fishing. Retying with a new tippet doesn't cut it. Don't take my word for it. Try this yourself.
