When I stopped using a stripping basket, I stopped forgetting to take it with me. I laugh sometimes when I go fishing now that I would trek back to my car to get something I "had" to have. I taught myself how to go without one by learning how to handle line. Handling line is just as important as casting and I gypped myself of learning this skill for the first six or seven years using a fly rod. I am not saying that stripping baskets are for idiots but you do neglect a very important part of learning how to fly fish. Also; a thin running line stinks in my opinion. They don't make you cast further. They make you spend about half your day taking out tangles. Thicker running lines can be coiled as ken said in three or four - ten to fifteen foot diameter coils like an extension cord. They very rarely tangle. On a long cast I like to hold the first ten to twenty feet of my line in my mouth. This requires some practice and slowing down from the new age conventional cast into the sunset style.
