Another beautiful night. First I took a friend to Mill Gut from 830-1100. A lot of large silversides 3-4” long scattered along the bars. Also, big pods of River Herring kept coming from the north down past the boat launch right along the beaches edge down into the flow. This went on for a couple of hours with large schools showing and disappearing every 20 minutes or so. Some of the fish were just hanging out on the bars as we found out once the water receded enough to wade out on the south side. Only saw a handful of bass rise over that time and couldn’t seem to figure out what fly they wanted or how they wanted it. Anyway, it was pretty cool to see all those herring moving around. At 11 I left Bristol and headed south. When I got where I was going I saw herons in the trees and a couple of herring well upriver. I kept moving down river and found a lot more herring. All I will say is the next part of the night involved night herons in the trees, nervous adult herring and very selective good size bass ambushing them in 6 to 24 inches of water. Quite a sight (and sound) to behold. After a lot of experimenting I finally managed one 28” fish on a 4” yozuri crystal minnow but there were bigger fish in there. Kept fishing till I got too tiered but I left the fish while they were still active around 2am. I’d imagine this scene probably goes on in all of our herring runs this time of year. While fishing last night I couldn’t help but recall someone telling me once stripers don’t eat herring until they are leaving in the late spring early summer because there are no bass large enough around to eat them this time of year. This person was a guide.
