There is a great deal to shared about them and their use both in the salt and in freshwater fishing.
The subject is broad based and interesting.
When I was a kid my favorite fly rod lure was a tin liz. It was a light weight spoon with a little fluttering tail. IT had a single hook and I learned about it from old men who had been using it for years. It was deadly on pickerel.
It was a great go to fly rod lure and it caught trout almost as well as a fly rod flatfish which was my fathers favorite fly rod lure. He liked to hang it downstream in those places you could not cast a fly to because of the brush that grew over the stream. His favorite was black with orange dots.He pulled some hummers out of those hidy hole places.
There was the fly rod Hula popper and there were many more fly rod lures available back in the first part of the last century. They have gone out of fashion but they are certainly part of the tradition. They are simple to use and are great for kids and old guys like me to enjoy for the pure fun of using them.
Weighted flies have a long history in fly fishing and will always be a viable solution to certain presentation problems.
I like all flies and I like to call by their right names. Fly rod lures and fly rod jigs and weighted flies are categories of fly fishing luredom that have been around for so long that one cannot fix the time of their origin presisly They have been here from close to the beginning I think...
Synthetics are fairly new and have added a great deal to the lore of fly tying. They have not replaced anything but they are a valuable part of the whole and have their rightful place.
Like I said; It is all good and each part has its own part to play in the fabric of the whole. I hope this board adds some valuable insight and a place to share thoughts that add to that lore.
