Bead chain eyes are the root idea that was used. A fellow named Virgil (Gue.......) from California made the first comet flies (light weight jigs) and probably there were earlier versions. Comets were made with brass beads with a metal axle between them. (Bead Chain eyes from sink stopper chains) They are the forerunner of lead dumbell eyes. Someone poured lead into that shape for more weight obviously and I can vaguely remember seeing those lead dumbell eyes in a catalogue a long time ago.
Weighted flies were banned in many fresh water rivers at one time and perhaps still are in some places.
The way they got around that was by using heavy hooks way to big for the size of the fly. They called them Irons.
Streamer Jigs and Jig flies have history. They are Jigs and fall into the catagory of fly rod lures. They are not in the catagory of fly's no matter how much someone may want them to be. They are perfect as fly rod lures because that is exactly what they are.
