I am sure he used them and tied flys with them and gave them to his friends toi try and they used them too. Maybe Wapsi picked them up because he sent them to them or somebody else he shared them with did.
I think Clouser used them first on a crayfish pattern for smallmouths in the Susquehanna River.
I think he said that the spin guys were catching fish on jigs real well and so he tied this fly up to mimic the action of the jugs and it worked really well for him. I think that Lefty promoted his style of tying with lead eyes in a story in a magazine and The idea took off for him and made the name Clouser famous and synonymous with lead eyed flys.
