I'll bite.

I don't like generalizations about how successful an angler will be based on gear choices. Success is a result of skill and experience. I has nothing to do with line type, fly choice, or the color of your socks. As for intermediate lines - that dog will hunt just fine in the hands of the right angler and I doubt anyone would argue that.

What if an angler chooses to cast a certain type of line just because he or she enjoys it? Does that make the person a brain-washed orvis zombie if it happens to be an intermediate line?

What it comes down to on the flats is the angler's ability to see the fish and present the fly in a natural and lifelike manner. A skilled flats angler should be able make this happen with any type of line and might use floating, int and sinking(gasp!)all in one day.

For the record - I don't like intermediate lines but they have a place just like floaters or any other line. Just another option and we are lucky to have so many options these days.

If you develop tunnel-vision about using one type of line in a given situation you are limiting yourself in the big picture.

Floating or intermediate? Which is "better"? How can you prove it? WHO CARES?

I say fish the way you want, when you want, and with the gear you enjoy. Throw what you read in books and magazines out the window and form your own opinions based on first-hand experience. There are no absolutes in this game and there is too much BS floating around to take any one person's opinion too seriously.

I say be a kid again and experiement and discover.
