I was on Brewster flats last week. Beautiful nocloud still day. Tide was right with a low about 10 AM. Fish were everywhere on the flats and in the surounding channels throughout the flat. I was using a single ellie, charteuse and olive hackles with olive body braid about 3 inches long. The flat was loaded with swarms of Sand Eels about an inch and a half long.

I took my yak out there and notice that on the flats with shallow water I could not get a cast at a fish as the fish spooked before I could get a fly to it. I beached my yak and wandered the flats. The fish were as skitish as I have ever seen them. often even refusing to follow let alone take. Over on the channels there were 5 other fishermen using intermediate lines and Clousers. Thet were pulling in fish after fish. I never saw or heard of any of them catching anything over 20 inches. I thought that weird as there were many big fish on the flats a few up to about 30 pounds. Most that I saw were mid 20s to mid 30s. I wadded and staulked and caught 4 fish all day. The fish I caught were considerably bigger than what I saw the guys on the channels catchiing. None were smaller than 30 inches and one was about 40 inches. The middle fish both 35-36 isgh fought the hardest. A decent fish in shallow water sure wants to get in deep water. My eight weight rod got a work out.

After riding the tide in trolling and spooking fish I sat in the parking lot, enjoyed a beer and relaxed. The other guys were long gone.

What I am wondering is did the channel hold only small fish or just that the smaller ones were more agressive. One guy saw me fighting a bigger fish and came over to check it out. He cast at a few fish but they did not like his clouser dragging through the sand.

It was a good day.
