Todd, I would like to clear something up that new wave fly fishermen do not realize yet.
To quote you in your post.
"Honestly If I never read your book and tried this style of fishing, which for the life of me I can't understand is not the norm, I would not be using a fly rod in the salt."
I wrote that book before there was a fly fishing boom industry.
This is not my style of fishing. It is the traditional style of fishing in the salt with a fly rod that was always used until 1994 or so. What I wrote about in Striper moon was the norm in salt water fly fishing for stripers.
It has not been improved on at all. There is no evolution involved from traditional to the modern as the modern was a fabricated fantasy created out of nothing to sell product and make money.
Presentation is still the norm for traditional anglers and I am one of them. I wrote what I knew about and nothing more. I did not write for an audience of buyers as there was no audience of salt water fly fishermen that were looking to buy anything at the time.
All these years since then and - before - Salt Water fly fishing got hijacked by the, "business," of fly fishing, - I and other pre-boom fly fishermen fished this traditional way and very successfully.
There were no Clousers or jig flies and no addiction to synthetics and fly rod lures or intermediate lines or sinking lines as basic parts of anyone's equipment or high line speed and tight loops or any any of the rest of the non-traditional, (sell new salt water products and methodology,) "cast to the next time zome," and "the fly fishing frontier" marketing implants from the new sell, sell, sell fly fishing industry.
The modern salt water invasion was like a train wreck that descended on those of us who were actually fly fishing in the salt all our lives.
It was like an Alien invasion complete with its own foreign language that had nothing to do with tradition.
People think that I am trying to change things when actually I am not trying to change them at all.
I am just trying to preserve them.
I was doing these things all my life and so were the few fellows who fly fished before the boom hit.
We are not trying to take over anything we are just trying to make sure that the history and the hard earned wisdom of our fathers and our fathers fathers is not swept away and lost forever by those who have no interest in fly fishing except to make a quick buck.
I am trying to preserve the heritage and the good fly fishing techniques that work consistently and are fisherman friendly.
There has been a lot of bullshit written about salt water fly fishing in the last 13 years. It will all fade away as will the remaining fly shops and magazines and the new salt water celebrities and destination home boys. They will fade away unless they begin to serve the people and not themselves.
Nothing has changed about salt water fly fishing at all since I wrote Striper moon..
It is exactly the same as it was when I wrote Striper moon except...
The people who came into it after 1994 have been fed a complete modern fabricated line of marketing horseshit about stripers and flies and rods and fishing deep and rips and beaches and flats and tournament casting and sinking lines and strip retrieves and lead head flies and just about everything else to do with fly fishing in the salt and all of the disinformation was done for fame and a quick buck.
I haven't changed and neither have the fish or the fishing. I have stayed the same and stood my ground for tradition and I am glad I did.
The industry is folding and disappearing because it was built on error and sand and short sighted greed.
Traditional striper fly fishing on the other hand is strong and growing stronger. I have had no allies in this fight for tradition except from grass roots fly fishermen. Thanks guys. Striper Moon - the book - may be re-published because of public demand not because of product niche marketing.
I feel very good about that.
