Well, it's long past opening day but I finally got out to do a little trout fishing yesterday.
Launched the Scanoe at Wallum Lake about sunrise after getting an earful from a couple seasoned citizens fishing from shore. They told me nothing's been biting even though they were seeing lots of fish.
Scouted a couple areas 'til I found fish feeding. It was a little windy so I went heavier than I wanted and strung up my 9' 6wt flyrod with a bass taper 7wt line. Decided to try a #18 Griffith's gnat dry with a #16 pheasant tail nymph on a dropper. Casting over a rocky flat with water 2' to 3' deep I was getting takes on about every third cast. Most were browns 14" to 17", but a few rainbows of similar size were taken too. Kept two fish for supper and quit about 9:00am as the wind was picking up considerably. I could have stayed and switched to light spinning gear, but some guy with more boat than brains and a jet skier were out ripping up the water and making what had been a nice quiet morning into something else.
Found the same seasoned citizens still fishing when I went back in and they asked how I did. When I showed them my catch and explained my results they asked if I knew what they were doing wrong. One was using powerbait and the other crawlers. Both were casting out about as far as they could into 15' to 20' of water. I suggested they try fishing much shallower, so one cast out about 12' into 3' to 4' of water and within minutes had his first fish, a brown about 17". As I left they were both fishing the shallows and catching fish.
Not a bad day, but I sure wish recreational boaters and pwc users had better manners.
