Subject: Partridge and Orange soft hackle

Lately, I have been frequenting the Carmans River. Usually a gold bead hare's ear nymph is a killer, but not yesterday. I added and subtracted split shot or moved it up and down the leader...nothing. There still wasn't a hatch occuring so I went with a wet fly I tied the day before. I had tied a #14 Partridge and Orange soft hackle (substituting grouse for partridge since I have a bag of it). First two casts I got short strikes so I repositioned myself to get a latter swing. It worked on the first cast for a nice 12" brown. That also explained the rejection of the hare's ear. Previously there were only rainbows at this particular hole but since the last storm browns moved in. Everyone uses hare's ear here and rainbows, who have a less developed memory than browns, are often fooled. Not browns who are second only to LMB in memory. But the soft hackle was something new to them and I continued to catch a nice number of them until I lost the fly to a tree branch. It was a timely loss because a #18 BWO hatch started up along with some black caddis.
