I have always had good success with wolly buggers. My favorite is black with a with a white marabou tail. For the body on this, I use a bunch of peacock herls instead of chenille. I don't know if it makes a difference but it pleases me and the flies seem to catch fish. All black and all white buggers work well too. I have also caught fish on Mickey Finns and Hornbergs. I almost always cast across stream and dead drift, then let the fly swing. Sometimes I'll even cast slightly upstream. I pick up fish on all parts of this-- on the drift, at the beginning of the swing, during the swing and at the end of the swing. Sometimes they hit when you retrieve too. I rarely fish with more weight than a beadhead. I'll only add split shot when the river is especially high and fast. As the water drops, I even switch to buggers without beadheads. They are hitting up top with good regularity now, though, especially during the late morning and thru the afternoon on sunnier days. The quill Gordons are coming off strong and there are lots of cadddis.
